Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Derby South, Cllr Lucy Care, has launched a campaign to get lifts installed at Derby Rail Station. Cllr Care said:
"The lack of lifts to platforms 2-6 on Derby Station has been a concern for elderly and disabled people for a long time. The current rebuilding work on the bridge provides a real opportunity to improve the situation. Sadly, despite the Disability Discrimination Act recently coming into affect, no lifts are being installed as part of this work. I have therefore started a petition to get lifts installed at Derby Rail station. I hope as many people as possible in Derby will support this important campaign".
If they want to travel by train, wheelchair users and other people who find using stairs difficult will continue to be escorted along the service tunnel's steep ramps - which were built for mail trucks- as all passengers are using at present..
Derby Liberal Democrats intend to forward completed petitions to Network Rail, in order to draw to their attention the strength of public feeling on this issue. Copies of the petition have been put out across much of Derby by the Lib Dems. Additional copies of the petition are obtainable by calling Derby 298934 or emailing derbylibdems@tiscali.co.uk
