Second anniversary of historic Anti-war march marked in Derby

February 15, 2005 12:00 AM

This week is the second anniversary of the biggest ever demonstration in the UK, the 1 million+ march against the Iraq war. The demonstration, which took place in London on February the 15th 2003, involved many local people from Derby. To mark the 2nd anniversary local campaigners, including Lucy Care, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Derby South, will meet this afternoon, at 5.30/6pm in St Peter's Square.

Cllr Care said:

"It is two years since the historic march against the war. The government did not listen to the huge number of people who marched in London. They went ahead and invaded Iraq in defiance of large swathes of public opinion. Evidence which has come to light since the invasion, indicates that the evidence which the government used to justify the war was very shaky.

"Now we are in Iraq we must set a timetable for withdrawal. We need an exit strategy, British troops should be withdrawn from Iraq on a phased basis as the security situation allows."
