Derby still not getting its fair share of GPs

February 28, 2005 12:00 AM

National Health Service (NHS) formsRecently released figures revealed by the Liberal Democrats, indicate Derby is still losing out in terms of GP provision. Primary Care Trusts in Derby have significantly fewer GPS than the national average.

Cllr Lucy Care, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Derby South stated; "It is just not good enough that Derby should have so many fewer GPs than the national average. Our local GPs do an excellent job. From the responses I have had so far to the NHS survey I have been conducting across Derby South, it is clear that most people are very satisfied with the work of their GPs.

However, despite the excellent work of our GPs, the figures indicate that we need more of them in Derby. It is unfair that GP provision in Derby is below that of much of the rest of the country. It is clear that in terms of GP provision, Derby deserves better".

Figures just released show that, in June 2004, there was an average of 64 General Medical Practitioners per 100,000 population in England. In the Central Derby Primary Care Trust there were only 60 General Medical Practitioners per 100,000 population, in the Greater Derby Primary Care Trust there were only 57 General Medical Practitioners per 100,000 population.
