Petition organiser Wendy Harbon said, "Charles Kennedy was very keen to sign the petition as are many people in Derby".
Cllr Hilary Jones, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council said "It is good to know that the leadership is backing this campaign. We will continue to battle to stop Labour's plans to sell-off such an important part of our city's heritage."
