Lib Dems demand rethink on Home Care

July 17, 2006 12:00 AM
Lib Dem Cllr Wendy Harbon discusses Home Care cuts with a local pensioner

The Labour-Tory Council's cuts mean many local disabled people and pensioners are losing their homecare services

The Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council is calling on the Labour-Conservative administration to rethink its changes to homecare provision in the city. The changes have led to many vulnerable elderly and disabled people in Derby losing meals on wheels, laundry, personal care, cleaning and shopping services.

Liberal Democrat Councillors present the motion at the next full council meeting on Wednesday. If accepted the motion should see pensioners and disabled people who have lost their home care services have them restored.

Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council Hilary Jones said; "These changes have had a really damaging affect on the lives of many vulnerable people in Derby. I and my Council colleagues have been contacted by many disabled and elderly people across Derby about this issue. Many vulnerable residents are distressed at losing services they relied upon.

"This motion is a way of saying to the Labour-Tory Alliance who run Derby City Council; Look these cuts are harming many vulnerable people in Derby think again. I hope the Council will have the humanity to change its mind and restore these services"
