Derby Liberal Democrats are seeking to submit an emergency motion to next Wednesday's meeting of Derby City Council calling on Tony Blair to step down as Prime minister.
Cllr Hilary Jones leader of Derby Liberal Democrat Councillors said "I think it is essential that Derby City Council discusses this situation and sends a firm message to Tony Blair.
"We have a Prime Minister whose Ministers are resigning and whose MPs are queuing up to call for his resignation. This kind of instability cannot go on any longer.
"Here in Derby we have seen the effects of poor leadership and hamstrung government. We have a Labour administration losing support and unable to meet its commitments, staggering along ineptly, having to rely upon the support of the Tories.
"We do not wish to see such a lack of leadership replicated across the whole of Britain. It is time for us on Derby city council to make it quite clear that it is in the best interests of Derby and the rest of Britain for Blair to go as soon as possible."
According to the Council's constitution an emergency motion can be submitted after the deadline with the consent of the Mayor.
Cllr Jones continued "I hope that because of the gravity of the situation the Mayor will allow us to discuss this emergency motion at next Wednesday's meeting."
