Liberal Democrat Councillor, Ruth Skelton is calling on the council to rebuild her old school's swimming pool.
The swimming pool at Gayton Community Junior School, in Cllr Skelton's Blagreaves ward, is due to be closed by July next year by the Labour/Conservative alliance who run Derby Council.
Ruth said "I have many good memories of learning how to swim in that pool. It is a really important local sports facility. At a time when there is real concern about obesity amongst young people it is crazy for the council to close such an important school sports facility.
"When Lancaster Sports Centre has just been closed by the Council it shows just how deep Council cuts are affecting some really important local sports facilities.
"I really hope the Council will have a change of heart on this issue. The swimming pool at Gayton Junior School is used by many local schools to teach children to swim. It would be a tragedy if a replacement facility was not built there.
Councillor Bob Troup said "We have been particularly shocked that the local Labour Party representative has been sending round a leaflet asking people if they want the Swimming Pool to close. The only reason why the future of the facility is threatened is because his Labour led Council are refusing to fund the replacement!
"Because we feel strongly on this issue we have set up a petition to rebuild Gayton Swimming Pool. The petition will be published in our next "Focus" leaflet for people to sign. We have also set up a special online petition for people to sign at
