Local Liberal Democrats are fighting Labour's callous cuts to pensioners and disabled people's care
Local Liberal Democrats are calling on Derby City Council to stop cuts to elderly and disabled people's care services. The call comes as Derby Liberal Democrats reveal figures which show that over a quarter fewer people are receiving council homecare services compared to this time last year.
The Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for some time on the issue of cuts to elderly and disabled people's care. They have collected petitions from people opposed to the cuts and are now demanding that Derby Council's Labour leaders rethink their cuts policy.
David Batey, Chairman of Derby Liberal Democrats stated "Labour council leaders must have an urgent look at this policy. Elderly people and their families have been contacting our councillors and campaigners concerned about care cuts.
"Also there has been a series of letters in local newspapers from the families and carers of elderly and disabled people concerned about the affect the cuts are having. These people's experiences should not be ignored by the council.
"Now we have the hard facts to prove how bad these cuts are biting. In the last year the number of people receiving care from the council has fallen by nearly 900.
"The policies of Labour leaders on Derby council appear to be hitting some of the most needy people hardest."
Councillor Ruth Skelton Lib Dem social care spokesman said "Labour seem to be burying their head in the sand on this issue. There are many people who are being hurt by the cuts. Yet council leaders seem unwilling to admit this.
"Now we have the evidence which shows how many people are losing care I hope Labour Council leaders will finally listen and stop these cruel cuts to care services."
