Local Liberal Democrats have revealed how Labour lied to local people about the closure of Gayton Swimming Pool
Research by local Liberal Democrats has revealed how Labour deceived local people over the closure of Gayton Swimming Pool. Derby Liberal Democrats have examined Labour's leaflets put out in the Blagreaves ward in the run up to the local elections.
From their research they have produced a report which lists numerous examples where Labour pledged to save the pool or accused the Liberal Democrats of lying when they claimed Labour would close the pool.
The Labour led Cabinet confirmed in June, a month after the local elections, that it would close the pool.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Ruth Skelton said "I Hope the issuing of this report will shame Labour into dropping their plans to close Gayton Swimming Pool.
"The report shows how Labour have been guilty of blatantly deceiving local people over this issue. In their leaflets before the local elections they made a commitment to 'fight to secure funding for Gayton Swimming Pool'.
"When the Liberal Democrats said Labour wanted to close the pool we were accused by Labour of telling a 'blatant lie'. This being their usual response whenever the Liberal Democrats say something Labour don't like. Of course we now know the truth is that Labour do want to close the pool.
"At Derby Council's Cabinet on June 5th Labour council leaders decided to close Gayton Pool.
"Petitions, questions, speeches and even demonstrations do not seem to have persuaded Labour bosses to drop their plans to close the pool.
"I only hope that by revealing what they actually told people about the pool before the elections we can pressure them into allowing the pool to remain open".
