Local Liberal Democrats are fighting to save six Derby Post Offices which are facing Labour's Axe
Local Liberal Democrats have launched a petition to save six Derby Post Offices which are threatened with closure.
The Abbey Street, Ashbourne Road, Chester Green, Pear Tree, Wilmorton and Shelton Lock Post Offices face closure as part of government plans to close 2,500 Post Offices across Britain.
Local Liberal Democrats are mailing petitions to thousands of people living around the affected Post Offices.
Petition organiser Cllr Lucy Care said "It is essential that we save these Post Offices. Derby has already had sixteen Post Offices closed by the government a few years ago. It would be a massive blow to local people if another six are closed.
"The government has decreed the reduction in numbers without reference to the impact this will have on local people or local businesses. It is short-sighted and damages neighbourhoods and local communities. In addition, the piecemeal closure of Post Offices is leaving a disjointed and dis-functional network."
Derby Liberal Democrat Chairman David Batey said "We hope to collect a huge number of signatures which will force Post Office Ltd and the Labour government to drop their closure plans.
"Queues in remaining Post Offices are longer, the service less personal, as well as many people having to travel much further. To close six more Post Offices would be bad news for the thousands of people who use Derby's Post Offices each week."
