Labour have told local people that they saved the Abbey Street Post Office but actually it is to close
Local Labour bosses are under fire after issuing a leaflet falsely claiming that they had saved a local Post Office.
In the Winter 2007/8 Labour Voice being delivered in Derby's Abbey Ward, the local Labour Councillor claims that thanks to his and Labour leader Chris Williamson's efforts, the decision to close the Abbey Street Post Office has been deferred for at least six months.
In fact Post Office Ltd have made a decision to close the Abbey Street Post Office. The Post Office will close at noon next Tuesday, 15th January. This is part of a closure plan designed to meet the Labour government's target of closing 2500 Post Offices.
A spokesman for the Liberal Democrats said "Labour have been caught out trying to mislead the public. They claim to have saved a Post Office which is actually being shut on Tuesday.
"Last year the Labour leaders of Derby Council drew up a protocol which called on all parties to campaign honourably.
"Now Labour seem to be tearing up the protocol that they brought in. The decision to close Abbey Street Post Office has not been deferred for six months. The Post Office will actually close in a few days time.
"For Labour to raise people's hopes, to say that they had saved the Post Office for another six months when in fact it will be closing very soon is an act of deceit. The customers and staff of the Abbey Street Post Office deserve an apology from Labour."
