Liberal Democrat Eric Ashburner is leading the fight to save the Nottingham Road Post Office
The Liberal Democrats have put down a motion calling on Derby Council to back the campaign to save another Derby Post Office threatened with closure.
Last month the Post Office on Nottingham Road in Chaddesden became the seventh Derby Post Office to be threatened with closure. Post Office bosses announced the Post Office would be considered for closure.
Councillor Lucy Care who is proposing the motion said "Six Derby Post Offices are already being closed we can't lose another.
The Nottingham Road Post Office is needed. In particular there is a high elderly population near the Post Office. It also has very convienient parking, being in the heart of the Chaddesden District shopping area.
"The Nottingham Road Post Office was not even considered for closure until a Post Office in Nottinghamshire was saved and another in Lincolnshire was saved. The Post Office is only closing this Post Office because another was saved and this one has been chosen to take their place."
Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Eric Ashburner has been collecting petitions outside the Post Office and is supporting the motion. Eric stated "I and fellow Liberal Democrat campaigner, Leigh Alcock, stood outside the Post Office for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning collecting petitions to save it. In that short time we got hundreds of signatures against the closure.
"It is clear that there is both massive support and massive need for the Post Office."
