Local Liberal Democrats are opposing plans to massively increase Council rents
Planned rises in Council rents will hit local families hard warn the Liberal Democrats.
Derby's Community Commission has recommended raising Council rents by 8.2%. The decision was opposed by Bob Troup, a Liberal Democrat member of the Commission, but was agreed by Labour and Conservative Councillors.
Bob Troup said "This rent rise is not on. It is almost three times the rate of inflation. It is much higher than most people's wage rises and is higher this year because of Government controls in previous years.
"By supporting this huge rent rise Labour and Conservative councillors are making life harder for many families already on the breadline.
"Equalisation with Housing Association rents needs to happen over a longer period so that rent rises are more manageable"
The final decision on the rent rise will be taken by the Council at the budget meeting in March.
Liberal Democrat Council Group leader Hilary Jones says her group will oppose any attempt to put rents up by 8.2%.
