Local Liberal Democratsare backing an action plan to prevent flooding
Derby Liberal Democrat campaigner Cllr Lucy Care has welcomed new plans to protect Britain from the worst effects of flooding. The plans have been published by the Liberal Democrats, just as the Met Office warns that severe flooding is due to worsen in the years ahead.
Commenting, Lucy Care said:
"Both last year and already this year, Derby has been on alert as the River Derwent has risen to worrying levels. With the increasing uncertainty from climate change this is likely to get worse.
"The Government is much better at talking about climate change than doing what's needed. We need to start acting now to protect Derby and other parts of the country from flooding that will otherwise become increasingly common in Britain.
"Action is needed to reduce flooding, to minimise disruption from flooding and to be ready to help repair damage when flooding happens. Six months after last year's floods, the Government is still unclear what it should do.
"Many areas of Britain are simply left waiting for the next downpour.
"We must invest more in our flood defences, ensure we are not worsening the problems, for example by building new homes in flood risk areas, and make sure there is not only emergency but longer term help for help families hit by flooding.
"We need a comprehensive approach to flooding, brought together in a Flooding Act in Parliament to ensure action is taken and changes are made effectively, and to reassure the thousands of families who are at risk."
