Derby Liberal Democrats back "green energy revolution"
Local Liberal Democrats are delighted with government action to allow councils to sell electricity to the national grid.
Lib Dem Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has lifted the ban on councils selling energy to the grid. This is predicted to raise up to £200 million pounds of revenue for local councils.
Lib Dem parliamentary spokesperson for Derby North, Lucy Care said "Councils are now in an excellent position to lead on local renewable electricity generation. Derby City Council investigated options for cost-effective electricity generation while under Lib Dem leadership, but one of the biggest barriers was this ban on councils selling electricity."
Whilst the Liberal Democrats ran Derby City Council pressed for the PV (photo-voltaic) cells to be installed onto the roof of the Rivermead House flats in the city. They also investigated the possibility of wind generation on council owned land, both in and beyond the city boundaries.
Lib Dem Councillor Bob Troup, who was responsible for the schemes, said "This is really good news. It shows the difference that the Lib Dems are able to make as part of the coalition government - removing unhelpful regulation and encouraging local energy resilience.
"This change will not only help protect the environment it will also help councils save money, which is vital at this difficult time."
