Council backs plans to help people "save money, stay warm, go green"

Derby City Council has backed a motion that aims to help local people "Save money, stay warm and go green."
The motion was proposed by Blagreaves Liberal Democrat Councillor Joe Naitta.
Joe Naitta said "I'm delighted that the Council has supported this motion. Too many homes in Britain are not energy efficient. British homes are some of the most coldest and draughtiest in Europe. At present British households spend more on heating their homes than households in Sweden where winter temperatures are far lower.
"This lack of energy efficiency costs people money in higher fuel bills and can leave many people on low incomes having to choose between heating and eating.
"These problems need to be tackled and the motion sets out plans to help people save money, stay warm and go green. Energy companies have been made by Lib Dems in government to agree to provide free and discounted insulation to millions of people. If people are over 70 or on benefits they could be entitled to free or discounted loft and cavity wall insulation.
"At present there is still room for people to take up this offer. I would urge everyone who could be entitled to this, or knows someone who could be entitled, to take advantage of this offer."
People can call the Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512012 to see what insulation offers they are entitled to.
Cllr Naitta continued "In Autumn 2012 Liberal Democrats in government will be delivering on the "Green Deal". This scheme will create 100,000 jobs nationally in the home insulation sector and aims to insulate millions more homes.
"I'm delighted the council supported this motion and hope it will do its bit to promote the opportunities available for people in Derby to save money, stay green and go warm this winter."
